VOTE IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY
MARCH 5, 2024 

March 5, 2024 is primary day in North Carolina, and I encourage all of you to get out and vote! The deadline for voters to register to vote in the primaryis at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 9, 2024. For a listing of the offices being elected in 2024, please double click here

Voters affiliated with any political party may vote the ballot of candidates for their party only. For example, a registered Democrat may vote the Democratic primary ballot only. Some recognized political parties in North Carolina may not have primary ballots. Unaffiliated voters may choose to vote any one political party’s ballot or a nonpartisan ballot (if available). A voter cannot vote in more than one party’s primary.

There are many ways in which you can exercise your right to vote –

Early voting begins on Thursday, February 15, 2024 and ends at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2024. If you wish to take advantage of early voting, you can cast your vote at one of the following locations:

These locations will be open as follows:

Thursday, February 15 - Friday, February 16             8:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Monday, February 19 - Friday, February 23               8:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Monday, February 26 - Friday, March 1                      8:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, March 2                                                      8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

If you wish to vote by absentee ballot, you must request a ballot from the Mitchell County Board of Elections by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.

The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) allows certain voters who are active-duty military or their families as well as U.S. citizens abroad special rights that provide an expedited means to register and vote by mail-in ballot. The request must be signed before submitting it to the Mitchell County Board of Elections. The deadline for individuals eligible under UOCAVA to register to vote and/or request an absentee ballot is 5 p.m. on the day before Election Day.

On March 5, 2024, the polls will open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. Any voter in line at their assigned polling place at 7:30 p.m. will be able to vote. The busiest times tend to be early in the morning and just before the polls close. you can avoid longer lines by voting at off-peak times>

A sample ballot is shown below for your reference. You will notice that several positions (e. g. county commissioners, NC House and Senate, and some cabinet level positions) are not shown on this primary ballot. They are not shown on the ballot since the candidates have no primary opposition but will appear on our ballots for the November 2024 election.
